For Catholics, the Sacrament of Marriage, or Holy Matrimony, is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: the loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God's values. There should be in the life of every married couple a continual building of the Sacrament. Since a sacrament brings God's Presence to us in a special way, this Presence in their Sacrament should be an ongoing living experience. They should daily place themselves in this awesome Presence by placing themselves before God in a daily encounter of love and need.
Because of the need to prepare carefully, without the pressure of other preparations for your wedding day, there is a need for you to contact a priest at least six months before the proposed date of your wedding. At that time, he will give you some direction about the marriage preparation process. No date for the wedding will be set until a priest or deacon has confirmed that he will
a.) be responsible for the marriage preparation process
b.) witness (preside at) your wedding
