26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sacred Heart Parish, Oakland September 20, 2020, 10 am Virtual Mass
Mass Readings:
Penitential Rite:
Your ways, O Lord, make know to us; teach us your paths. Lord, have mercy Remember your compassion, O Lord, and your love from of old. Christ, have mercy. Lord, you guide the humble to justice, and teach the humble your way. Lord have mercy.
First Reading: Ezekiel 18:25-28
Thus says the Lord: You say, “The Lord’s way is not fair!” Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? When someone virtuous turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die. But if he turns from the wickedness he has committed, and does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life; since he has turned away from all the sins that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9
Remember your mercies, O Lord. Your ways, O Lord make known to me; teach me your paths, guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are my God my savior. Remember that your compassion, O Lord, and your love are from of old. The sins of my youth and my frailties remember not; in your kindness remember me, because of your goodness, O Lord. Good and upright is the Lord; thus, he shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble his way.
Second Reading: Philippians 2: 1-11 (Long Form)
Brothers and sisters: If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others. Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Gospel Acclamation: John 13:34
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32
Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people, “What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not.’ But afterwards changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did their Father’s will?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.” Songs for the Mass:
Entrance: All That is Hidden (Farrell), MI 501
If you would follow me, follow where life will lead: do not look for me among the dead, for I am hidden in pain, risen in love; there is no harvest without sowing of grain. All that is hidden will be made clear. All that is dark now will be revealed. What you have heard in the dark proclaim in the light; what you hear in whispers proclaim from the housetops. If you would honor me, honor the least of these: you will not find me dressed in finery. My Word cries out to be heard; breaks through the world: my Word is on your lips and lives in your heart. If you would speak of me, live all your life in me: my ways are not the ways that you would choose; my thoughts are far beyond yours, as heaven from earth: if you believe in me my voice will be heard. If you would rise with me, rise through your destiny: do not refuse the death which brings you life, for as thet grain in the earth must die for rebirth, so I have planted your life deep within me.
Preparation of the Gifts: What Wondrous Love is This (WONDROUS LOVE), MI 480
What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul? What wondrous love is this, O my soul? What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord to bliss to bear the dreadful curse of my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul? When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down. When I was sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown. Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul. Christ laid aside his crown for my soul. To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing, To God and to the Lamb I will sing. To God and to the Lamb Who is the great “I am”, while millions join the theme: I will sing, I will sing. While millions join the theme I will sing! While millions join the theme, I will sing! I will sing!
Remember your love and your faithfulness, O Lord. Remember your people and have mercy on us, Lord. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom should I fear? The Lord is my life and my refuge, when I call God hears. If you dwelt, O Lord, upon our sinfulness, then who could stand? But with you there is mercy and forgiveness and a guiding hand. O Lord, hear the sound of my call and answer me. My heart cries out for your presence; it is you I seek.
Sending Forth: There’s A Wideness in God’s Mercy (IN BABILONE), MI 476
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head. For the love of God is broader than the measures of our mind, and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more simple, we should take him at his word. And our lives would be thanksgiving for the goodness of our Lord. Troubled souls, why will you scatter like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will you wander from a love so true and deep? There is welcome for the sinner and more graces for the good; there is mercy with the Savior, there is healing in his blood.
